This gown is named after the Scottish heroine Matilda Chaplin – part of the ‘Edinburgh Seven.’ Matilda was one of the first ever seven women to be matriculated and study at a British University, studying medicine in 1869 at Univeristy of Edinburgh. Although they were prevented from graduating by fellow male students and the institution, they gained many supporters for their campaign, which resulted in legislation to ensure that women could study medicine at university in 1876.
